Moving Safety Forward in Nigeria

​​​​​​​​​​​​​AFI SFO teamed up with ICAO and ACI to present the first Runway Safety Go-Team (RST) Seminar of 2016 on the 20th January 2016. This event attracted participants from all 4 of the major international airports in Nigeria; Lagos, Kano, Abuja and Port Harcourt, with over 200 delegates participating including Nigeria's top aviation officials.  

​IATA's opening addresse was given by Ms. Funke Adeyemi who stressed the importance of aviation safety in Africa. Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) MD/CEO Engr. ​

Ibrahim Abdulsalam and Capt Henry Omeogu who represented the MD/CEO of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) also spoke at the event. Both reinforced Nigeria's commitment to improving runway safety throughout the country. 

IATA, ICAO and the AIC RST team members facilitated a very well received workshop with active participation from  delegates covering subjects such as runway incursion and excursion contributing factors, runway safety tool kits, hazard identification and associated consequences, risk mitigation and the make-up and purpose of a Runway Safety Go-Team amongst others.  

In a sperate event in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. IATA and ICAO briefed the Nigerian Minister for State Aviation, the Hon. Sen. Hadi Sirika on a number of aviation topics including the seminar. The Minister, who is himself an aviator has taken a welcomed lead in improving safety and efficiency in Nigeria.
