Addressing Cyber Security Challenges
Cyber security is a critical issue for airlines as a successful cyber-attack on an airline could paralyze operations and result in stranded passengers. IATA is assisting airlines in developing a robust cyber security strategy and driving coordination of global efforts to address cyber threats to aviation.
In his keynote address to the Civil Aviation Cyber Security Conference organized by the Ministry of Transport on 8 July 2015, Tony Tyler, IATA’s 6th DG and CEO, highlighted two opportunities to address cyber challenges:
- Collaboration with stakeholders. Given the rapidly evolving applications of technology, a systemic approach to understanding and addressing the potential risks is critical. This means adopting a holistic approach to cyber security which includes all our IT infrastructure as well as that of our partners
- Government partnership. Governments have access to critical security information. Private sector could never replicate this. And we cannot be fully effective in managing cyber security without this vital input. Governments must support industry efforts through sharing information with industry, adopting threat-based, risk-managed and outcome-focused frameworks that are balanced against industry capabilities and sustainability.
Aviation Cyber Security Toolkit
Work is progressing in the area of cyber security. Last year, IATA launched the Aviation Cyber Security Toolkit, which proposes solutions to run internal analysis of current cyber risks and identify ways to protect vital IT infrastructure for airlines, airports, ground handlers and others in the value chain. A second version of the toolkit will be released this year.
IATA together with, ICAO, Airports Council International, Civil Air Navigation Services Organization and the International Coordinating Committee of Aerospace Industries Associations signed a Civil Aviation Cybersecurity Action Plan in December 2014 to ensure that all industry stakeholders and governments promote a coherent and consistent approach to cyber security. All of the partners are working towards developing recommendations to be presented at the 39th ICAO assembly in 2016.
