Next Generation Air Traffic Control (NextGen) (US)

Latest Developments

  • The House and Senate versions of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2011 includes language which would fund the replacement of the US antiquated, radar based air traffic control sytem with satellite navigation
  • The House and Senate Committees are now working in conference to iron out the differences between the two versions of the legislation
  • Passage of a final bill this year continues to be elusive, with House and Senate leaders differing widely on controversial issues

  • IATA Position:
    • IATA strongly supports NextGen language in both versions of the bill
    • IATA supports the rapid deployment of a 21st Century air traffic control system, which will improve efficiency, shorten routes, lower costs, reduce emissions, and improve the passenger experience
    • IATA considers it critical to harmonize US NextGen with similar mondernization programs around the world, particularly Europe
