Aviation Environmental Best Practice Database

The aviation industry takes its environmental responsibility seriously and is constantly improving environmental performance.

Thanks to progress in technology, today’s aircraft are 20 decibels (or 75%) quieter than those of 40 years ago and a further 50% noise reduction is expected by 2020. They are 70% more fuel efficient than 40 years ago.

Best practices can bring substantial environmental benefits. IATA has, therefore, begun compiling a database of real-life examples of voluntary industry initiatives designed to minimise environmental impact.

IATA’s Database of Environmental Best Practice enables users to:

  • improve environmental performance, including fuel efficiency, through adopting some of the measures cited
  • learn more about the various initiatives to address issues such as noise, emissions, soil, water, waste and conservation
  • find out about the different methods the industry is using to minimise environmental impact - including operational, maintenance, ATM_cns, partnerships, technology and facilities design
  • further knowledge of the numerous research and development projects that are underway
  • contribute towards increasing awareness of industry efforts, by sending us your own examples of aviation environmental best practice
