By partnering with Neste, Petrol Ofisi, the only supplier in Türkiye that can offer SAF at multiple locations, has begun offering SAF refuelling to its customers in İstanbul (SAW) subsequent to Ankara (ESB) and İzmir (ADB). Respective legal obligations, issued by the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority, for using 1 pc S.A.F. in international flights will come into force in 2025.
To address the major environmental concern caused by aviation and its growing demand for air travel the focus is on sustainable air travel. Moreover, the primary method to reduce emissions should be amending fuel sources instead of purchasing carbon offsets and/or operating more efficient planes to lower carbon output. A significant benefit to adding SAF into the current aviation fuel pool is that it does not require a change to the fuel supply system or engines of transportation vehicles. Otherwise, the cost involved with transitioning the current system would be too onerous for the industry. Also, electrification for airplanes is not a solution given the current commercial scalability. That’s why, SAF has become the ideal drop-in fuel for the aviation fuel industry.
The SAF delivered by Petrol Ofisi, is fuel from renewable sources stemming from feedstocks (bio-oils, animal fat, recycled oils) with HEFA (synthesized paraffinic kerosene from hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids) and includes a conversion process with 50% blending ratio by volume, that complies with ASTM D7566 Annex 2. It is also known as alternative aviation fuel or biojet fuel. Unlike traditional fossil-based aviation fuel, SAF emits significantly lower levels of global greenhouse gas, making it an attractive solution for reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint. SAF is extensively tested and certified by regulatory bodies, ensuring the same safety and performance standards as traditional aviation fuel. By partnering with Neste, Petrol Ofisi is able to offer its customers a reliable and sustainable SAF supply chain.
