Dear colleagues,
The tremendous surge in aircraft orders is an encouraging indicator for the future of our industry. It certainly reflects the optimism that characterizes key markets such as China, India and elsewhere. But whatever the region, the keys to future success remain straightforward: relentless focus on greater efficiency to achieve needed profitability, and ever-improving safety performance.
The industry has done a great job in both areas but more needs to be done. Driving down costs has become a tougher challenge as global oil prices continue to push the profitability bar higher.
Your association is leading campaigns to 'simplify business' and to press our partners for greater transparency and cost effectiveness. It is also showing that the industry can take the lead on safety by framing new standards of operational safety - standards that will underline a new 'quality' dimension to IATA and its membership.
Our AGM this year will be held 4-6 June in Paris - the heart of Europe. Increasingly, European policies are shaping the world of international air transport. From new EU based approaches to international market access to environment; from data privacy to safety. The EU is impacting aviation far beyond its borders.
These are some of the challenging issues that will be discussed at our AGM and World Air Transport Summit. It will be an interesting and stimulating few days, and as always a great opportunity to meet other industry leaders.
I look forward to seeing you in Paris.
All the best,

Giovanni Bisignani
