IATA has voluntarily opted to make its Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit 2008 a Climate Friendly event. This means IATA is working with the respected international emissions reduction company - Climate Friendly - to offset unavoidable CO2 emissions generated through air travel, energy consumption, accommodation and travel to and from Istanbul airport.

On behalf of IATA, Climate Friendly will purchase and acquit premium Gold Standard carbon credits purchased from a wind farm in the Province of Çanakkale, in Turkey. This purchase helps support the wind farm to continue producing and expanding on its clean energy generation capacity of 108,000 MWh per year. The anticipated annual greenhouse gas emission reduction associated with the entire wind farm will amount to 54,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per annum.

Gold Standard carbon credits represent the highest standard in renewable energy carbon credits and projects provide environmental as well as sustainable development benefits for local communities. See www.climatefriendly.com for more details.
