CEO Insight Debate

 

Like so many industries, the airline industry has suffered greatly as a result of the economic shocks of recent years and is bracing itself as the specter of an even worse downtown in 2012 looms large on the horizon.




Moderator: Richard Quest
Richard Quest is CNN's foremost international business correspondent and presenter of Quest Means Business; the definitive word on how we earn and spend our money. He is one of the most instantly recognisable members of the CNN team and recently was central to CNN’s coverage of the British Royal Wedding. In addition Quest is the established airline and aviation correspondent at CNN. He currently presents the monthly CNN Business Traveller show. As a business travel specialist, Quest has become a voice of authority on subjects like the launch of the Airbus A380.

Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways
Mr Al-Baker is Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways, Doha International Airport, Qatar Airways Holidays, Qatar Aviation Services, Qatar Duty Free Company, Qatar Distribution Company and Qatar Aircraft Catering Company. In 2004, he was appointed as Chairman of Qatar Tourism Authority. He has extensive experience in civil aviation, having held various positions in the Qatari Civil Aviation Directorate, including Head of Finance & Administration. Mr Al-Baker has a BA in economics and commerce and holds a private pilot’s licence.

 

Dr. Piyasvasti Amranand, President of Thai Airways International
Piyasvasti Amranand graduated from London School of Economics, with Ph.D in Economics. He was Thailand's Energy Minister from 2006 to 2008. During the 1990's, Piyasvasti played a key role in formulating and implementing Thailand’s energy policy, particularly the introduction of competition and deregulation of the oil market and prices, the reform and privatization of a number of energy-related state enterprises like PTT and power generation business. Piyasvasti is currently holding a position of President of Thai Airways International PCL since 2009.  

Bronwyn Curtis. Senior Advisor, Global Banking and Markets at HSBC
She is Chairman of the Society of Business Economists, a board member of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, on the Council at the LSE and the Advisory Board at Imperial College Business School, as well as a member of The Times newspaper’s Shadow Monetary Policy Committee. Bronwyn was awarded an OBE for services to business economics in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2008.

Alex Dichter, Director, McKinsey & Co
Alex Dichter, a Director in the Tokyo Office of McKinsey & Company, leads the Firm’s Global Airline and Travel Practice. Alex’s work in the sector cuts across functions.  He has worked with Airlines around the world on topics related to strategy, organization and operations. Prior to joining McKinsey, Alex was a Pilot for Continental Airlines. Alex holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and an MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth College.

 

Mr. Alan Joyce, CEO, and Managing Director, Qantas
Alan Joyce was appointed CEO and Managing Director of Qantas on 28 November 2008. Mr Joyce previously served as CEO of Jetstar for five years from 2003, a period that included the commencement of the airline’s domestic and international operations. Prior to his appointment at Jetstar, Mr. Joyce spent over 15 years in leadership positions for full service carriers Qantas, Ansett and Aer Lingus. He holds a Bachelor in Applied Science (Physics and Mathematics) (Honours) and a Master in Management Science. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

 

John R Slosar, Chief Executive, Cathay Pacific Airways
John Slosar became the Chief Executive at Cathay Pacific in 2011. He joined the Swire group in 1980 and has worked with the group’s Aviation Division in Hong Kong, the US and Thailand.  He was appointed Managing Director of Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co Ltd in 1996, Managing Director of Swire Pacific’s Beverages Division in 1998 and COO of Cathay Pacific in 2007. In 2010, he was appointed Chairman of Swire Beverages in addition to his current role. Mr. Slosar is also Chairman of Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Ltd and on the boards of Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Ltd, Swire Pacific Ltd and Swire Beverages. Mr. Slosar is a graduate of both Columbia University and Cambridge University.
