Iqala Ngam (It starts with me)

Performing at the Plenary Opening - 10 November

As part of the AVSEC World Official Morning Opening Session, The South African Civil Aviation Authority is pleased to share with all participants a quintessentially African artistic ensemble, depicting South Africa's rich cultural diversity.

The Iqala Ngam ("It starts with me") programme is an initiative, to provide young people with a space and opportunity to develop themselves and become better citizens of South Africa.

The project started in 1998, working in primary schools in the different communities of Cape Town. In 2001 the project was introduced to Ntwasahlobo Primary School in Khayelitsha where the original dance group was formed and formalised and used to perform in the functions of the organisation and by invitation. Eight years later, the remainder of that original group consists of 12 young women, 5 of which are currently employed as interns in the organisation. Their role is to "give back" to other young children, which links to the name of the group - Iqala Ngam ("It starts with me").

The Iqala Ngam programme`s mission is not to develop professional dancers, but to develop young people and help them realise who they are and what they can become: confident, purposeful in life and, most importantly, aware of the social issues in their community and motivated to solve them.
