WELCOME TO THE STB E-NEWSLETTER

This month:

What does airline BCBP capability mean?

IATA has communicated and shared with the industry the IATA Board of Governor's mandate for 100% airline BCBP capability by 2008 and the 2007 target of 80 BCBP capable airlines. How is an airline validated by IATA as BCBP capable? What does it mean?

An airline is validated by IATA as BCBP capable when it provides a BCBP issued for a live flight. IATA then scans the BCBP and checks it complies with the IATA Standard (Resolution 792). According to the IATA standard, there are now 37 airlines that are BCBP capable. There are many ways for an airline to issue a BCBP. Read this document to determine if your airline is BCBP capable.

What's next for a BCBP capable airline?

BCBP capability is the first milestone. To achieve the full benefits of this technology an airline must engage airports, DCSs and ground handlers to ensure the smooth processing of passenger check-in and boarding, allowing the airline to provide passengers with the same level of service regardless of location. This is the vision for the Board of Governor's mandate for 100% BCBP by 2010.

To this end, IATA provides information and a series of tools that can help airlines and airports extend BCBP capability. As a start, the latest DCS Survey provides the plans for BCBP capability and the devices DCS's support: printers, boarding gate readers, and 2D bar code scanners. The BCBP scorecard shows the BCBP capability of airlines, which can be used to allow BCBPs to be issued for through check-in passengers. When it comes to implementation, BCBP workshops offer hands-on support from experts. Lastly, the interactive map provides a good overview of the BCBP capability of airports.

Case Studies: Towards 100% BCBP!

The 2010 mandate for 100% BCBP is already live in Basel Airport and Dubai's Terminal 2, which on January 2007, became 100% BCBP. In the case of Basel Airport, airlines are benefiting from a 40% reduction on CUTE charges. The airport is benefiting from cheaper equipment and lower maintenance costs and increased efficiency in its use of space. Finally, passengers are enjoying added convenience when using a home printed BCBP to bypass long queues.

Interline ET Implementation: Reaching 1000 IETs!

The last 12 months have seen a near trebling of implemented interline ET agreements. To date, 1003 IETs have been implemented. See the progression here.

To help carriers track implementations a compact format of the Bilateral Interline ET Agreement table (BIETA) has been developed and will be e-mailed to the interline ET contact of all carriers registered with the IET Matchmaker service at the beginning of each month. For more information contact Rob Levy, Manager ET Solutions.
