Don’t Forget to Declare It!

Do not forget to inform your passengers that as of 15 June 2007, all travellers entering or leaving the EU with 10,000 Euros or more in cash must declare the amount to Customs to comply with Regulation (EC) No. 1889/2005 of the European Parliament and Council.

Who must declare? Anyone entering or leaving the EU through external control points with

  • 10,000 Euros or more in cash
  • The equivalent in other currencies or easily convertible assets like bonds, shares or travellers’ cheques

Where must the declaration be made? With Customs or another authority at the control point entering or leaving the EU.

Why must the declaration be made?

  • To deter illegal activities
  • To comply with EU legislation
  • To avoid penalties for non-compliance

What will happen if a declaration is not made?

  • The cash could be detained or seized
  • The individual could be subject to penalties

This regulation is intended to address crime, money laundering and terrorism at a pan-EU level. For more information on this subject or to download available documentation that can be distributed to airline passengers, please view this document (PDF)
