Cargo safety: highlights from the 2006 Safety Report

The 2006 Safety Report, with an in-depth analysis of last year’s cargo accidents, is now available. Here are a few highlights: the report shows an increase in accidents of 21% over the previous year. Out of a total of 77 accidents, 18 of them were cargo-related. Non-IATA cargo operators had 11 accidents; IATA members a total of seven. The number of western-built aircraft involved in accidents represents 95% of the total.

With the goal of constantly improving operational safety and enhancing efficiency for the industry, IATA has developed initiatives such as IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) for dedicated cargo operations, and has held several awareness seminars on relevant safety issues for both IATA and non-IATA cargo operators.
