G4S Aviation Services: The Challenges of Securing a Global Cargo Hub

Among the world’s top 10 trading markets, Hong Kong currently accounts for 2.8% of total global trade. This burgeoning gateway has transport links with most of Asia’s major cities, and half the world’s population is within a five-hour flight.

As a global-trade crossroads, Hong Kong is the world’s busiest air-cargo hub, with large increases in the volume of shipments each year. Hong Kong International Airport, ranked the busiest airport for international air cargo and Asia’s third busiest passenger airport, was accountable for 36% of Hong Kong’s external trade in 2012. Over UK£1-million-worth of cargo is handled each day at one terminal alone, so the need for comprehensive and highly effective security is paramount. The airport is constantly seeking new solutions to support this ongoing growth in traffic, which is where G4S comes in.

G4S employs 400 people at the airport, with about 90% of those jobs relating to air-cargo security. In addition to standard warehouse and terminal guarding services, G4S delivers tailored security solutions for a range of Hong Kong businesses such as couriers, logistics, catering companies, and retail outlets in the passenger terminal. Services provided include identity checks, people searches, vehicle checks, traffic-control operations, patrolling, CCTV monitoring, security permits, and escorting cargo and visitors.

By uniting the best people with the latest technology, G4S protects both the contents and the reputation of this global air-cargo hub.

Ultra Electronics Airport Systems: UltraTrak Upgrades and Expands for Five More Years in South Africa

Ultra Electronics’ UltraTrak Baggage Management system has been delivering baggage-reconciliation capabilities worldwide since the early 1990s. The system is deployed in over 50 sites across five continents and handles over 170 million bags annually.

Recently, Ultra Electronics upgraded its flagship South Africa system following a contract renewal, which is projected to provide an excellent 10-year return on investment for the customer. The upgrade, implemented by Ultra’s on-site team with support from the UK, follows the expansion to three additional South African airports in late 2012. As a result, six remote stations across South Africa plus the hub, Johannesburg, will enjoy full baggage reconciliation, segregation, tracking, and reporting capabilities until at least 2018. In addition, Ultra is currently working with Airports Company South Africa to integrate UltraTrak more fully with other airport systems via the local integration broker.

UltraTrak’s multi-site transfer features allow airlines and handlers to view inbound bag details from airports feeding into the main hub. It thereby improves the flow of information across all seven airports from check-in to departure. UltraTrak also helps identify mishandled bags and enables bag queries to be resolved before the passenger even arrives at the airport, for better customer service. Moreover, bag-room efficiency—especially close to pushback—is enhanced, while the number of rejected scans experienced by baggage handlers is reduced.

United Aviation Services (UAS): The International Operators Scholarship

In a dynamic industry such as business aviation, human capital and talent management become primary competitive advantages.

Providing international trip support services and charter solutions for over a decade, UAS understands the strategic value of investing in professional and educational training programs. Likewise, in an increasingly socially conscious environment, UAS is heavily investing in corporate social-responsibility initiatives.

UAS International Trip Support has been a longtime National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) member and partner with NBAA’s International Operators Committee (IOC). In addition to providing panel support and trip support services, UAS also promotes educational and training programs, enabling individuals to enhance their safety knowledge and professionalism.

In a remarkable partnership, the NBAA offers the International Operators Scholarship to those entering the business-aviation industry, helping them to develop their international-operations career. This scholarship program is administered by the NBAA’s IOC with the support of three member donors, including UAS International Trip Support, the only member donor based in the Middle East.

UAS is continuously looking for ways to reach beyond its operations and contribute to the business-aviation industry as a whole.
