IATA CIO Forum: The North American Launch

Digital Business for the Airline CIO

For the past three years, IATA has held an annual regional symposium for airline chief information officers (CIOs) and senior IT executives in China.

But this year, the CIO Forum is coming to North America.

From 5 to 6 November 2014, Miami will host a select group of IT experts and executives from airlines, airports, service providers, and vendors to explore ways the aviation industry can use technology to leverage innovation.

As IATA’s Director of Information Technology Systems (ITS) and CIO Pascal Buchner says, “Technology used to provide the product, but now technology is the product.”

The inaugural theme, “Digital Business for the Airline CIO,” covers both the challenges facing CIOs today and the solutions that technology can offer.

The packed agenda of presentations, keynotes, and panel discussions with leading aviation CIOs include the following hot topics:

IATA’s New Distribution Capability (NDC)
IATA’s E-Cargo
IATA’s Simplifying the Business initiatives
IATA’s Paperless Aircraft Operations

In addition, a new IT-related area of involvement, CIO Community, will be launched to accompany the latest incarnation of the CIO Forum.

ACS Aviation Solutions: Enhancing Air Safety in Africa

ACS has become associate partners with the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) to work on increasing air-travel safety within Africa while lowering the cost for passengers.

Like AFRAA, ACS recognizes the continent’s safety issues both on the ground and in the air. As a result, ACS is strongly committed to assist AFRAA with global safety audit programs such as the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) and the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO).

Working closely with AFRAA, ACS is developing a cohort of accredited IOSA auditors based in the African region. As a first step, ACS will conduct the QMS/IOSA Lead Auditor Training course and identify the right personnel to assume safety-audit responsibilities within the airlines. Once trained and selected, experienced IATA-compliant personnel will receive on-the-job safety-audit training.

The objective of this approach is to expand the knowledge and experience base within the African aviation community. Creating a safety culture and setting the bar higher for all African carriers will lead to safer and more sustainable air travel on the continent.

Barich, Inc.: Partnering for Success

Barich, Inc.’s strategic partnership with IATA has proven to be one of our company’s valuable success stories.

Active participation in IATA’s Common Use (CUWG) and Fast Travel (FTWG) Working Groups has enabled us to present the resulting initiatives to clients and aviation leaders.

This process has helped resolve business challenges, establish lasting relationships, and spread the influence of the global IATA effort.

Initially, much of our company’s resources were focused on improving the understanding and adoption of common use. That effort helped to establish new opportunities for Barich, Inc., such as with the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP), a branch of the American National Academy of Sciences.

Largely due to our IATA partnership, we were selected to prepare a “Common Use Synthesis”—the first for the United States. Later, we were selected to prepare the Common Use Guidebook for Airports and Airlines. This comprehensive guide covers all common-use operational, facility, business, and technology issues.

While involved with the CUWG, we joined the FTWG and supported efforts in writing the Bags-ready-to-go Recommended Practice. The ACRP again selected Barich, Inc., to prepare a decision-making tool to help US airports and airlines evaluate the viability of passenger self-tagging. Through our work with IATA, ACRP, and ACI, we assisted the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in understanding the adoption of self-tagging programs in the US.

Since 2007, we have delivered IATA’s message of common use, self-tagging, and other initiatives to airport organizations. IATA’s cross-engagement in airport management has fostered a positive view of the association and its role in the global aviation community.

Cavotec Fladung GmbH: A New Aircraft-cooling Standard

The IATA Airport Handling Manual (AHM) covers the development of necessary safety devices, as well as required operating procedures. The introduction of the new IATA AHM 997 standard for subfreezing ground cooling is the result of several years’ development and testing. This work was carried out primarily by Cavotec and Airbus. Delivering 25–50% more cooling power into aircraft than previously possible, the new functional standard is a starting point for a new-generation ground-cooling system.

The performance of the subfreezing ground-cooling system is comparable to the APU/air pack. This makes it an attractive alternative in hot and humid climates, such as the Middle East and Asia. Today, 140 airports restrict the use of APU. Switching from APU/air-pack usage to subfreezing ground cooling will have several advantages, including the following:

Improved passenger comfort even in extreme ambient conditions
Reduced turnaround times
Significant fuel savings
Improved environmental performance through reduced noise pollution and emissions
Reduced maintenance costs for APU/air packs

One focus during the development and testing phase has been the safety of the aircraft ventilation system. A significant feature of the new standard is the measurement of the static inlet pressure to the aircraft and the related control of the mass flow, inlet temperature, and humidity of the pre-conditioned air.

In May 2013, the operating procedures and detailed requirements were implemented in the aircraft maintenance manuals for Airbus A318-A321, A330, A340, and A380 aircraft.

Looking ahead, additional development is planned for further integration and automation of ground-operating systems with the aim of eliminating human error.

UAS is continuously looking for ways to reach beyond its operations and contribute to the business-aviation industry as a whole.

Narita International Airport Corporation: Supporting Japan’s National Strategies

In the summer of 2012, following the devastation caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Japanese government released the “Japan Revitalization Strategy.” The plan includes a tourism strategy that targets 25 million foreign visitors by 2020. Obviously, the aviation industry will have a great part to play in making this target a reality.

Serving Greater Tokyo, one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the world, Narita Airport handles almost 50% of Japan’s international traffic. Even before the “Japan Revitalization Strategy” was released, the airport’s operator, the Narita International Airport Corporation, had already begun capacity expansion work. Following the sanction of local communities in 2010, the airport’s capacity will soon be increased to 300,000 movements.

The airport has also taken steps to ease peak-hour congestion by redesigning the terminal building and erecting more aircraft stands to meet the increased demand. The addition of next-generation low-cost carriers has introduced a new growth market while enhancing the airport’s offering.

Narita Airport continues to work closely with airlines and other stakeholders to support Japan’s strategies and contribute to the global aviation industry.

NIIT Technologies: Revolutionizing Travel Distribution

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has led a collaborative industry initiative to define an Extensible Markup Language (XML) messaging standard for airlines and travel agents. The innovative, personalized New Distribution Capability (NDC) seeks to address the need for a technologically innovative and customer-centric industry solution.

Approximately 60% of ticket sales are sold by travel agents who use a pre-Internet messaging standard. Adopting the NDC Standard is a win-win situation for global distribution systems and travel agents alike. They will be able to access the same products and offers that airlines sell through their websites.

The NDC Standard will give agency customers a personalized online shopping-style retail experience. Airlines will be able to build platforms that provide offers, airfares, availability, personalization tools, and ancillary services tailored to each customer profile and transaction history. This approach will stimulate healthy competition and innovation while providing customers a range of choices. Passengers will also be able to compare all kinds of offerings and be recognized and rewarded for their selections.

In a survey conducted by IATA and NIIT Technologies, a global IT solutions provider for the aviation industry, about 42% of companies believe that the NDC Standard will become the norm in the next 12 to 24 months. The NDC Standard will reinvent the current distribution landscape and elicit innovative product offerings across direct channels.
