News Brief: Cargo Services Conference adopts measures to strengthen supply chain

Istanbul – The IATA Cargo Services Conference, a permanent and autonomous body consisting of representatives from IATA member airlines, today adopted a number of measures at the World Cargo Symposium:

  • A standard electronic and paper consignment (cargo & mail) security declaration. This will provide regulators with an audit trail of how, when and by whom cargo has been secured along the supply chain. The declaration will facilitate the adoption of Secure Freight and e-freight.
  • ULD (unit load device) operational standards related to loading and unloading, transportation, storage and airworthiness. These standards will be used by all members of the supply chain who deal with ULDs. In parallel, a ULD handling e-learning module for operations staff was also launched.
  • A requirement to have a time and temperature-sensitive label on all applicable shipments as of July 2012.
  • A  new standard model agreement for postal operators and airlines to facilitate the transport of mail by air.

Implementation of the above measures is subject to necessary government approvals and subsequent certification of effectiveness by IATA.

In addition, the IATA joint Cargo Agency and Cargo Services Conference confirmed the industry move toward cargo-XML messages, calling for the development of four additional XML messages this year and setting a sunset date for maintenance of Cargo-IMP messages at the end of 2014.
