CargoIS - Frequently Asked Questions

When is CargoIS information published each month?

CargoIS reports will be available on the 20th of each month.  If the 20th falls on a week-end or holiday, the reports will be available the next business day.

How does CargoIS calculate "weight"?

CargoIS reports chargeable weight.

How does CargoIS calculate "revenue"?

CargoIS figures do not include other charges such as fuel and security surcharges. These are not true revenue and are not included. The calculation performed by CargoIS represents a true net revenue figure.

How does CargoIS calculate "net revenue"?

The calculation is as follows: (A+B+C+D) - (E+(F*(1 or -1 based on G)))

A = Weight Charge - PP (All charges prepaid by cash)
B = Valuation Charge - PP
C = Weight Charge - CC (All charges collect)
D = Valuation Charge - CC
E = Commission
F = Discount
G = Discount Indicator (negative ("-") or assumed positive)

How does CargoIS calculate "yield"?

CargoIS calculates yield as net revenue divided by chargeable weight.

How CargoIS calculate the "YTD" comparison?

The calculation is as follows: (Current Year-Previous Year)/Previous Year

How does CargoIS determine the date of data records?

CargoIS uses air waybill (AWB) date of execution, e.g., CargoIS for July 2010 contains only records for AWBs executed in July 2010. AWBs for previous months settled in July 2010 are placed in the data sets for the month in which they were executed. In this way, as data ages, it becomes more accurate and complete.

There are anomalies in the weight / revenue figures.

1) Negative airline revenue or weight is caused by negative value figures in CargoIS statistics. Negative values could occur when correction records do not exactly match original AWBs, e.g., different route, different weight break, different agent code, different month, etc. This is caused by a data entry error at the submitting party level. Those correction records are included in the data set in order to minimize impact on the country bottom line (for airlines & freight forwarders) caused otherwise by rejecting them and leaving uncorrected data in the file.
2) Negative market revenue can be found in a specific route in which a carrier has a significant market share as well as negative revenue caused by negative value figures (as explained in point 1) in the same time period. Therefore the market figures become negative for this time period.
3) Airline revenue or weight > Market revenue can be found in a route in which a carrier has a significant market share and other carriers in the same route have negative revenue caused by negative value figures (as explained in point 1) in the same time period. This will lower the market revenue for the time period.
