Purpose of the Manual
The basic purpose of IATA Technical Operations Policies is to reflect IATA positions on subjects that are not felt to be accommodated satisfactorily, or are not covered at all, by ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
A secondary purpose is served in instances where the objectives of IATA Technical Operations Policies are accommodated by existing SARPs but significant implementation or operational difficulties are known to exist. In those instances reference is made to the relevant ICAO provisions, with stress on the aspects where implementation or operational difficulties are being experienced.
Use of the Technical Operations Policy Manual
The policies and instructions contained in the Technical Operations Policy Manual are based on the latest technical data and operational experience. They have been established to plan and execute technical activities in accordance with IATA policy.
While IATA Policy is not binding on individual Member Airlines internally or their individual negotiations with other bodies, it is binding on members of IATA Delegations and IATA Management when speaking externally on behalf of IATA.
Should any individual consider that all - or any part of a policy, procedure or instruction - requires amendment or alteration, he should notify the Director, Operations, IATA.
