Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) is expanding across the regulations and the industry. The States, the airlines, and the training organizations have realized that CBTA is a far more efficient way to develop a competent pilot workforce when compared to the traditional task - or hour-based training and checking.

It is IATA's longstanding belief that CBTA training programs provide the necessary safety and efficiency benefits required by the continuous increase in the complexity of the civil aviation system. Hence, IATA promotes the Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) approach to the full spectrum of pilot training, from pilot aptitude testing, pilot initial licensing training, instructor/evaluator training and operator training, and offers a wide range of guidance materials to support the implementation of CBTA.
