A Win-Win Relationship

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is committed to cooperating with airlines to create a win-win situation for all parties. Working in close collaboration with the airlines and, in particular, the Hong Kong-based airlines, we have grown into an international and regional aviation center for both passengers and cargo.

The airlines have ample opportunities to grow their businesses as we enhance airport operations and capacity. As a result, passengers enjoy superb airport services and a great flying experience. 
Airports and airlines are like partners in a waltz—moving in harmony to perform a dance everyone can enjoy. For instance, the smooth transfer that many passengers compliment us on is a result of seamless collaboration between airlines and airports. Because airlines provide us with the latest flight information and transfer passenger details, we are able to assign parking stands to facilitate passenger transfer from one flight to another.

We have also teamed up with airlines to provide downtown check-in services at coach and ferry destinations in the Pearl River Delta. We have even installed mobile boarding-pass scanners in the airport to match the airlines’ commitment toward a paperless environment.
The aviation industry is so fast-moving we can’t afford to stand still; and to stay competitive, we have to work together to plan for the future.

As partners, airlines and the Airport Authority Hong Kong  look for win-win solutions that enhance the attractiveness of HKIA to both passengers and cargo shippers. The views of the airlines are always sought on different projects—from minor ones, such as the relocation of check-in counters, to major developments. The $1.16 billion (HKD9 billion) Midfield Concourse with 20 parking stands, which is designed to cope with increasing passenger traffic in the medium term, is a case in point. Similar to many other developments at HKIA, we are gauging the views of airlines every step of the way, from design to the actual commissioning of the Midfield Concourse in early 2016.

When we compiled our latest 20-year long-term development blueprint, HKIA Master Plan 2030, we drew upon the Airport Infrastructure Planning and Development Users Working Group, which is comprised of members from home carriers, together with the Board of Airline Representatives in Hong Kong and the Airline Operators Committee. The staff at the regional office of IATA also participated in these discussions and provided many useful suggestions based on their first-hand experience, which we incorporated into the Master Plan.

Airlines and other business partners also played a leading role in the three-month consultation process in 2011, helping us to explain the challenges and opportunities facing HKIA and the aviation industry in Hong Kong.

The partnership with airlines will only grow stronger. As HKIA awaits government approval for the airport’s future direction, our continuous dialogue with airlines will help us to ensure that we continue to provide passengers with a memorable travel experience. It is only by working together that we can formulate the best long-term development plan for Hong Kong, allowing the airport to remain a competitive regional and international aviation center.
