The ICAO High Level Policy Group on Climate Change has made little progress on the key issues related to market-based measures and the risk of political gridlock continues to rise. That would not be good for member airlines as it would leave countries free to impose their own, possibly overlapping, national or regional measures which could rapidly become very expensive. A number of countries have therefore turned to the industry for input on what we believe would be the best way forward.
The IATA Climate Change Task Force (CCTF) has spent two years reviewing how to operationalize our carbon neutral growth from 2020 target in the fairest and least expensive way possible to build on the progress the airlines have made.
It is anticipated that the Board will be proposing a resolution to the AGM in Cape Town and IATA’s local representatives will be contacting all member airlines in advance to explain and address any concerns.
