New Distribution Capability
NDC is the IATA-led collaborative industry initiative to define a messaging standard that will modernize the communication format between airlines and travel agencies. This will enable agents to have access to airline products and services that today are typically only available on airline websites. Using internet programming language (XML) based standards, NDC will enable a dynamic marketplace, not possible with today’s closed proprietary systems.
The NDC foundation standard was adopted by the IATA Joint Passenger Services Conference in October 2012 as Resolution 787. Industry pilots will begin this summer. They will involve airlines, travel trade and IT providers.
Resolution 787 was filed with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for their approval on February 14, 2013 (all IATA Conference Resolutions and Recommended Practices are filed with the DOT for exemption or approval). Until 1 May, all involved parties can file comments. IATA is facilitating the filing of positive comments by airlines and other industry partners.
Spreading the word
IATA has undertaken a vigorous advocacy campaign designed to promote NDC with relevant regulators around the world. While our primary focus to-date has been in Washington, D.C. and Brussels, we are broadly spreading the pro-consumer, pro-competition NDC message and countering efforts by some to mischaracterize our efforts to their advantage.
