Operations

IATA continues in its efforts to bring about a coordinated approach to volcanic ash that clearly puts operational decisions in the hand of our member airlines - the operators.
In preparation for the upcoming ICAO Volcanic Ash Task Force 2 (IVATF/2) meeting in Montreal, 11-15 July, IATA has participated in the work of the various Sub Groups to promote harmonized Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) output of information based on visible ash detected by the naked eye or satellite imagery.
In the short-term IATA is :
- Pursuing better coordination between adjacent VAAC's (most recently between Darwin and Wellington regarding volcanic activity in June)
- Representing our member airline interests in these regions as we strive for harmonized global VAAC output
- Scheduling a meeting with representatives from all 9 VAAC's to discuss ways to improve harmonization and advisory output (to occur during the upcoming IVATF/2)
