The use of standardized phraseology is one of the most important factors involved in the process of communication. It provides for quick and effective communication allowing us to overcome differences in language and at same time reducing the opportunity for misunderstanding. Ambiguous or non-standard phraseology is a frequent causal or contributory factor in aircraft accidents and incidents.
IATA, together with the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations (IFALPA) and the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA), jointly prepared a Phraseology Report that identified the following factors leading to misunderstanding and misinterpretation:
- Use of general aviation English in lieu of standard phraseology
- Rate of speech delivery
- Lack of Harmonization

ISAGO – 100th service provider
The IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) program reached another milestone in May 2012 when Alyzia, based in Paris Charles De Gaulle airport, entered the registry as the 100th ground service provider.
ISAGO also welcomed its first Australian ground service provider into the registry with
Skystar Airport Services. Today ISAGO is present in over 120 airports worldwide.
The audit pool is growing as well as TAM Airlines (Brazil) and UTAir (Russia) recently joined the program.
