In June 2010 the Board mandated IATA to mobilize the industry with the goal of automating baggage rules by April 2011. The Airline Tariff Publishing Company (ATPCO) developed the centralized database needed to consolidate the presentation of individual airline baggage rules and facilitate collection of baggage charges. To be successful, the ATPCO solution needs to be embedded within reservations, pricing and ticketing systems and available at check-in level.
By April 2011, 250 airlines had approved the release of their data with ATPCO. Three IT providers had released their solution and GDSs had communicated their cutover dates to their airline customers. Amadeus is the first major GDS that went live at the end of April for 16 airlines that completed the early implementation process successfully and is covering 50 airlines today. Amadeus scheduled the global rollout on 30 June 2011 for all airlines that have not been activated previously.
The 2011 Board target of six live GDSs is forecast to be reached before the end of 2011.
