Baggage Services Consulting

Practical ways to reduce baggage mishandling

Blue and red luggage

Baggage mishandling heavily impacts numerous stakeholders within the air transport industry. IATA has been assisting over 200 airports and 80 airlines to reduce mishandled baggage in the course of its  Baggage Improvement Program (BIP).

But baggage mishandling is still estimated to cost the industry $2.58bn per year, and airport managers have little means to address the issue.

IATA Baggage ServicesConsulting are designed to assess current baggage operations, identify issues and recommend personalized solutions to improve baggage handling performance.

Comprehensive baggage handling solutions

Based on solid experience with the world's leading airports and airlines, IATA consultants have developed easy to implement best practices covering the entire baggage operation:

  • Intensive study of the entire baggage handling process to identify the root causes for mishandling
  • Focus on transfer baggage, where most problems occur
  • Organization of workshops with key stakeholders: airports, airlines and ground handlers
  • Detailed review of current operational processes

Based on all this research, the consultants put together a detail report identifying the issues, and proposing solutions with a detailed implementation plan. Assistance with implementation can also be provided.

From quick wins to strategic options

The approach - and the solution - can be customized to the needs and means of airlines, airports and ground handlers.
