Reason code for BM also ok for RM?

Hi IATA.

The reason code 8O is designated for billing memos (SC09) related to MIBA/BIBA. Can this reason code technically also be used for rejection memos or would it fail validation if we sent SC 04 with RC 8O?

Please advise.

Thanks,
Claudia (LH)

Dear Claudia,

The SIS Pax WG discussed in 2009/2010 if all Reason Codes of the Billing Memo (BM) should be copied into the Reason Codes of the Rejection Memo (RM).

We then decided NOT to do this and we agreed on the following:

·         The rejecting carrier knows what kind of billing they are rejecting (e.g. MIBA/BIBA).

·         The carrier receiving the rejection also knows for what kind of billing they are rejected for (as they made the previous billing).

·         The intention of the Reason Code in RMs is to tell the billed carrier why it is rejected…. and not what transaction is rejected.

Hence, regarding your question, it is more important to use the current RM Reason Codes to define WHY you have rejected the MIBA/BIBA.

Hope this clarifies.
Best regards

Hi Claudia,

In addition to my previous post, the RAWG has also discussed your suggestion at their 15 June 2011 meeting.

The RAWG agrees with the original intention of the Reason Codes: to define why something is rejected and not what is rejected. Having said that, you may, of course, feel free to put forward a paper at the next IATA RAM (RA45) for an industry voting.

Best regards
