Attention Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers: to ICAO's English language requirements IATA has a solution for you!

IATA's Aviation English Solution is designed to enable Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers around the world to meet the ICAO level 4 language proficiency standard.  IATA's Aviation English Solution consists of the three following services:

1. An Assessment Service to determine the initial English proficiency level and training requirements
2. A customised Language Training Programme
3. Proficiency Testing to validate the English proficiency level in accordance with ICAO's level 4 standard

1. Assessment Service

Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers call in to a testing centre to complete an oral assessment of their English pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interactions.  A consolidated report is provided with recommendations for training.

2. Language Training 

Based on the results of the assessment, tailored Aviation English modules are delivered to Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers.

3. Proficiency Testing 

Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers are tested to confirm whether they meet or exceed the ICAO level 4 proficiency standard.

• Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers involved in international operations and whose first language is not English.

Note:
As of October 8 2007 the management and implementation of the Aviation English Language Solution has been transferred in its entirety to Berlitz Languages, Inc. (Berlitz). IATA Training and development institute will continue to share responsibility, with Berlitz, for maintaining the quality of service and content to all existing and prospective clients. IATA will remain the contract party for those who entered into Aviation Assessment and Training contracts prior to October 8, 2007.
