Ornamental Fish Industry is Making Waves
IATA visited the 11th aquarama international ornamental fish trade show in Singapore in May and met with trade representatives to hear about the new aquatic container requirements featured in the 36th edition of the
Live Animal Regulations.
Conclusive talks were held towards the development of an aquatic chapter for the upcoming editions, highlighting the specific needs of ornamental fish transportation.
Between 2001 and 2009 better packaging techniques were developed and the survival rate for exported guppies dramatically improved from 78% to 99%. The ornamental fish industry is a major freight contributor to IATA members, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. In Singapore only, the ornamental fish capital of the world, 140 million fish were exported in 2008, amounting to some US$50 million, accounting for 22% of the world’s ornamental fish exportations.
