IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA)

The IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) program is an evaluation system designed to independently assess and improve the environmental management of an airline.

IEnvA is a voluntary program based on principles in compliance with environmental obligations and a commitment to continually improve environmental management.

More About the Progam

The initial scope of IEnvA includes the activities that all airlines carry out (i.e. flight operations and corporate activities) but new modules covering ground operations (GO) and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) are already under development.

Implementation Stages

The complex global nature of airlines poses challenges for full environmental management system (EMS) implementation; hence, IEnvA is based on 2 independently assessed phases:

  • Stage 1 - Planning & Compliance
  • Stage 2 - Implementation & Review

“South African Airways has found the IEnvA programme to be an excellent method with which to plan an environmental strategy that is relevant, informative and has an impact that will affect real change in the manner in which an airline tackles its environmental obligations. IEnvA is an important tool that an airline can utilise to fly responsibly and minimise environmental impacts and SAA intends pursuing IEnvA and IEnvA Core+ accreditation as a cornerstone of Environmental Policy.”

- Iain Cruikshank, Group Environmental Affairs, South African Airways

Environmental Standards

The environmental standards that underpin the IEnvA program are based on recognized environmental management system principles (such as ISO 14001) and have been developed by a joint team of environmental consultants and leading airlines.

The airline assessments are undertaken by independent accredited Environmental Assessment Organizations (EAO’s):

  • Verification Statement (pdf)

IEnvA Stage 1 Standards has been reviewed by leading a environmental management consultancy that found Stage 1 Standards are at least as stringent as the requirements under ISO14001 and, in some instances, more rigorous.

IEnvA Registry

The IEnvA Registry is a list of airlines that have successfully completed an independent IEnvA assessment (Stage 1 / Stage 2).
