On 29 April 2010 the US Department of Transportation (DOT) rule enhancing airline passenger protections became effective. This rule deems chronically late flights to be an unfair and deceptive practice and requiring US air carriers to:

Adopt contingency plans for lengthy tarmac delays and to publish those plans on their websites

Respond to consumer problems

Publish information on flight delays on their websites

Adopt customer service plans, to publish those plans on their websites, and audit their own compliance with their plans
This new rule does not apply to non-US airlines.
