The IATA Fuel Data Standards enable the use of a common set of data standards by the industry for the entire fuelling cycle from tender/bid to invoicing that will support an efficient, effective and widespread implementation of digitalization and allow a paperless fuelling cycle to be conducted.   were developed with airlines and industry partners through the Fuel Data Standards Group. The standards are available for free download below.

Fuel Operational Messaging Standards

The ramp is a highly complex area with several vehicular movements under the aircraft during the turnaround process and requires timely and accurate exchange of information between parties. Refueling is an essential part of this process. Using the Fuel Operational Messages (formerly known as ‘Pre-Transaction’ messages) allows communication with multiple stakeholders for an effective and efficient turnaround of the aircraft.

Adoption of these Industry data standards deliver substantial benefits to both suppliers and customers of aviation fuel, including:

  • Improved data quality and accuracy
  • Improved staff productivity
  • Reduced number of disputes and queries
  • Improved timely invoice settlement and cash management
  • Improved customer service
  • Reduced cost of Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable (AR/AP) function

Lifecycle of Fuel Data Standards

The purpose of the proposed standard is to facilitate a cost effective exchange of data between parties to consummate a buy/sell transaction.

There are four separate XML Fuel Data standards that reflect the lifecycle of Fueling aircraft:

  • Tender / Bid: Enables tendering for a fuel contract, the award of a fuel contract and the acceptance of an award
  • Operational: Captures information required for a preliminary order through a revised and final order, concluding with a Fuel Summary
  • Transaction: Captures information required by the supplier or customer to process and settle an electronic fuel transaction
  • Invoice: A standardized electronic invoice for fuel purchases that can be used by both fuel suppliers and airlines in the airline industry.
