IATA Operational Cost Reduction
The IATA Operation Cost Reduction Initiative (OCRI) is based on the IATA Green Team concept. OCRI focuses on four operational areas:
- Maintenance
- Aircraft downtime and turnaround planning
- Fleet planning
- Flight Operations planning and management

OCRI Achievements
OCRI has full support from OPC members. Currently, the OCRI identified 109 candidate airlines, located worldwide, with fleet size ranging from 10 to 500+ aircraft. The first assessments project 2009 savings for 9 airlines of US $360 million. Currently, preparations are being made with 16 airlines to schedule GO team visits and complete first assessments.

Green Teams
Green Teams Presented at the OPC
OPC members strongly support the Green Teams using their own airlines and the benefits attained as an example. Moreover, these OPC members highly recommended that all OPC members should participate in the Green Team initiative.
The Green Team initiative has further expanded in 2009 to include:
- Support for airlines to comply with the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV).
- First edition of the Benchmark Assessment Report
- Remote support
- Regional workshops

There have been 93 FEGA on-site assessments to date, including four Green Team visits since the beginning of the year and seven airline reports/implementations with a total savings of 0.95 million tonnes of CO2.
Green Teams Can Prepare Airlines for European Emissions Trading
The European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) will be a huge cost burden for airlines. The IATA Green Teams can be used to effectively study airline fuel operations with the aim to reduce emissions and therefore reduce the ETS bill.
Airlines can greatly benefit from additional Green Team visits every few years to ensure the programmes initiated from the previous visit are properly implemented and producing the expected benefits. Second visits are particularly important to acknowledge the ETS consequences on the airline and avoid any unnecessary costs.
The ETS scheme will affect 169 of IATA member airlines. However, less than 100 member airlines have had a Green Team visit.
Europe is not the only region implementing an emissions trading scheme. Other regions are currently looking at applying their own trading schemes, so the members not affected by the ETS should also prepare for the possibility of being affected by other similar schemes.
