STEADES Development

In support of IATA's Safety Information Centre project, IATA continues to focus on improving services offered and increasing STEADES participation. Following participant requests, IATA has implemented the following enhancements:

  • Online database query: the STEADES Query Tool offers participants direct access to the global data via the web.
  • Benchmarking: highest, lowest and average rates for event types are now posted in the private STEADES website to enable participants to benchmark organisations.

These developments helped to attract over 20 new airlines to the programme since January. This unprecedented growth means the Safety Information Centre project will have a solid foundation from which to build. To view a sample of a STEADES analysis, please visit www.iata.org/STEADES.

Improving Safety in Africa

Earlier this year, IATA announced the Implementation Plan for Safe Operations in Africa (IPSOA) project as part of IATA's initiatives to improve safety in Africa. One of IPSOA's targets is funding thirty African airlines to join the IATA FDA service for a period of three years. The project will use the existing IATA FDA service operated out of the CAE Flightscape office in Ottawa, Canada. The FDA service has been in operation since 2005, initiated when IATA and CAE Flightscape agreed to join forces to provide a full FDA service to airlines who do not wish to implement an in-house FOQA/FDA/FDM programme. FDA currently serves more than 22 airlines, four of which are from the Africa region and will benefit from the IPSOA plan.

IOSA Update

With over 575 audits conducted on over 300 airlines to date, IOSA continues to grow as a vital element, enhancing operational safety in our industry. The IOSA registry currently lists 227 airlines that have undergone an IOSA audit and are committed to maintaining their registration every two years.

IOSA is now mandated for both existing members and any airline wanting to join IATA. The IATA Resolution for 2008 states that all existing IATA members must be IOSA registered before the end of the year. Failure to do so will result in termination of their IATA membership. Of the 230 members, 164 are currently IOSA registered with most of the remaining airlines in the corrective action phase of their IOSA audit.

As of 1 January 2008, IATA has decided to underwrite the core costs of all renewal audits for IATA members in order to further promote safety and IOSA with its members.

Also, It is important to note that 28% of the IOSA registered airlines are non-members of IATA. This clearly demonstrates that IOSA is a programme for all airlines to benefit from.

More Achievements for ISAGO

Industry interest in the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) programme continues to grow as 11 airlines officially joined the ISAGO Audit Pool, as of the end of July. Another 10 airlines are in the process of signing the Pool Agreement and committing to ISAGO audits by the end of 2008.

ISAGO Training Courses

Participating airlines are sending auditors to the ISAGO auditor training courses - a programme requirement which will ensure standardisation of auditor qualification and practices. At the end of July, 20 enthusiastic auditors from Air Canada, United Airlines, Avianca, TACA and Air Transat attended the course held in Montreal, with positive results. The three courses scheduled for the month of August in London, Geneva and Santiago, Chile are completely sold out!

More Information Seminars

After a very successful session in Santo Domingo on 14-15 July, IATA is focusing on its next ISAGO information session in Seattle on 4-5 September, hosted by the Port of Seattle. Similar to the previous seminars, the number of registrations is beyond expectations with 80 participants enrolled from airlines, ground handling companies, regulatory agencies and airports in North America. Download the event agenda and registration in the ISAGO Information Seminars page.

Audit Requests Roll In

Audit requests from ground handling companies intensified in July. Additionally, many IOSA registered airlines providing third party ground handling services are planning to undergo the corporate element of the ISAGO audit at the same time as their IOSA renewal audits. Ground handling companies and airlines interested in ISAGO - schedule your ISAGO audit now!
