Global Safety Information Centre
IATA is working on the new Global Safety Information Centre (GSIC), a web-based hub for all safety-related data and tools. It will allow the production of reports providing benchmarking capabilities on each set of data (IOSA, ISAGO, STEADES, Safety Report, FDA, etc.). The goal is to use the data to develop prevention strategies that will ultimately decrease the number of accidents/incidents.

STEADES
In 2008,
STEADES welcomed 34 new participants into the programme, bringing the total number of participants to over 85. This is unprecedented growth in the programme.
In our drive to continue to improve the STEADES service, periodic short “mini” analyses were sent to participants issuing STEADES Reports. These included analyses on Medical Events On-board, Callsign Confusion, Diversions and most recently on Hard Landings. Feedback is positive and we plan to continue this initiative in 2009. The next topics to be covered include Bird Strikes and Altitude Deviations.

Safety Report
IATA is currently finalising its annual Safety Report, which summarizes findings from the 2008 accidents. This year, the report includes a new section dedicated to cabin operations and analysis of events such as passenger evacuations and in-flight fires. It will be available for purchase on the IATA website in April 2009.
IOSA
With most of the IATA membership now IOSA-registered, IOSA continues to evolve and become implemented within the operations of hundreds of airlines.
Currently, over 665 IOSA audits have been conducted, of which over 265 of them are renewal audits and close to 300 airlines are listed on the IOSA Registry.
This year will definitely be a challenging one for IOSA as the number of audits conducted will be the highest yet, with over 250 audits expected. However, we’re well prepared and ready to achieve our goals.
A particular focus in the first part of 2009 is to re-structure the IOSA quality processes – both internally and externally – to enhance efficiency.
ISAGO
ISAGO’s launching in 2008 was very successful. In total, 18 headquarter audits and 19 station audits were conducted.
The ISAGO Pool Welcomes Three New Players!
Air Zimbabwe, Air Transat and Libyan Airlines have recently joined the programme, increasing the number of ISAGO Pool members to 30 airlines. Each airline will be carrying out ISAGO audits throughout the year, with the intention to share audit reports, thereby saving themselves the cost and effort of conducting their own audits at all of their stations.
ISAGO Audits
In January, four ISAGO audits were conducted in four different continents:
- Swissport in Washington, USA
- Groundforce in Oporto, Portugal
- National Handling Services (NHS) in Harare, Zimbabwe
- Srilankan Airlines in Colombo, Sri Lanka
A Fast Growing Registry
Two major handling companies have entered the ISAGO Registry in early 2009: HACTL for the services provided at Hong Kong International Airport, and Dnata for the services provided at Dubai International Airport.
In the beginning of February, the National Aviation Services (NAS) joined the Registry, becoming the fourth ground handling company registered under ISAGO.
