Special Topic: Industry in Crisis - Action Plan

At IATA's AGM, held in Istanbul 1-3 June, Giovanni Bisignani, Director General and CEO made it clear in his State of the Industry speech, that the airline industry is facing yet another devastating crisis.

IATA is doing everything possible to support its member airlines. Below are the topics, including actions we are currently working on.

Infrastructure

Objective: Raise awareness and accelerate coordinated implementation of ATS and airport improvements.

Actions:

  • Work with key stakeholders (ICAO, ECAC, IFATCA, CANSO, ACI, FAA and NAVCAN) in the provision of air traffic services and airports.
  • Work with ANSPs on the Save One Minute campaign.
  • Formalise the infrastructure campaign for all regions.
  • Implement specific regional plans including:
  1. Implement RSVM (in Africa)
  2. Implement new routes (Africa, Americas, Asia Pacific, North Asia)
  3. RNAV/RNP implementation
  4. Evaluate ATM shortcomings
  5. Fuel efficiency awareness

Operations

Objective: Support airlines in identifying cost reduction and fuel efficiency improvement measures in the areas of flight and ground operations, dispatch, engineering and maintenance, aircraft upgrades and fleet renewal.

Actions:

  • Deploy more Green Teams.
  • Identify further opportunities to upgrade currently operated aircraft.
  • Accelerate the implementation of security and regulatory cost reduction campaigns.

Technology

Objective: Identify the availability and assess the potential for increased fuel efficiency on future technology not yet certified in order to prioritise certification and implementation.

Actions:

  • Accelerate certification and implementation of future technology with high efficiency potential.
  • Ensure alignment with all relevant industry stakeholders to achieve earliest possible certification and implementation of 3rd generation biofuels.
