Safety Management Systems Training Implementation

The Safety Management Systems (SMS) implementation workshop programme is finalised and the syllabus is ready. The workshops will be organised on a regional basis and open to all member airlines free of charge. The focus will be on the simplicity of implementing SMS in an organisation that already uses Quality Management System principles (like IOSA).

Safety Project Reaches Another Level

The Safety Information Centre project, a platform for safety sharing has now clearly defined parameters and IATA will consult the market to assess the available options. The next phase will require a strong IT-related process and a clear communication path. We expect to finalise this element of the project in September.

Happy 5th Birthday IOSA!

This month marks the five year anniversary of the official launch of IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA).

What a remarkable five years it has been!

  • With over 570 audits conducted and 214 airlines on the IOSA Registry, IOSA has changed the history of airline operational safety auditing.
  • With the implementation of over 900 standards and recommended practices in 350 airlines, IOSA has helped to raise the level of aviation safety.
  • The number of redundant code share audits was reduced, with a global, harmonised environment resulting in significant cost savings for airlines.
  • Acceptance to varying degrees by states such as Egypt, Madagascar, Turkey, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Brazil and Panama, while others are considering IOSA as complementary to their own audit programmes.
  • The FAA, US Department of Defense, Transport Canada, DGAC France, UK CAA and CASA Australia are strong supporters.
  • With some 170 IOSA audits every year, it is clear that the programme will continue to grow and evolve over time.

IATA is now looking into further developing IOSA for the industry of tomorrow, and ensuring that IOSA remains relevant and beneficial for the industry. This is in line with IATA's high commitment to improving Aviation Safety.

ISAGO Grows

300 enthusiastic attendees demonstrated the growing interest in the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) programme at the information seminars held in Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam and Johannesburg in May and June.

The most recent audit took place in late June when National Aviation Services (NAS) from Kuwait was audited at the headquarters (HQ) level.

Many other ground handlers, large and small, are already in the process of scheduling an audit for the coming months. Additionally, IOSA-registered airlines that have embedded ground handling businesses offering third party services are scheduling their HQ ISAGO audit at the same time as their IOSA renewal audit. This brings significant savings and added convenience for all parties. Ground handling companies wanting to undergo an ISAGO audit can now complete the request form online.

Auditor training is a key element in IATA’s ability to deliver audits at the station level.  Five training courses are scheduled to be held from late July to early September. You can find these details on the ISAGO website.

ISAGO Programme Manual (GOPM) coming up

Following the publication of the standards manual and the audit checklists (available for free on www.iata.org/isago), the ISAGO Programme Manual (GOPM) is in final preparation. The Manual contains standards that govern all aspects of the management and operation of the ISAGO Programme.
