Africa
The IATA's regional office for Africa and the Indian Ocean (AFI) is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. It's mission is to represent the interest of IATA member airlines and accredited travel and cargo agents. IATA AFI maintains close ties with governments, agencies, airports, air navigation service providers and others in the African aviation industry while actively promoting IATA's 2012 industry priorities.

IATA’s main activities in the African region
Safety
Safety is the industry’s first priority and continues to be the main focus for IATA in Africa. Although hull loss rate improved slightly in 2010 Africa safety performance remains poor, therefore particular emphasis in 2012 will be placed on the following projects to mitigate the high accident rate:
- Prevention of runway excursions ( RERR Toolkit )
- IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA)
- IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO)
- Implementation Program for Safe Operations in Africa (IPOSA)
- Global Safety Information Center (GSIC)
Environment
IATA Africa is working with its member airlines towards becoming an environmentally responsible industry, reducing carbon emissions, through different programs, campaigns and lobbying efforts through
Operations and Infrastructure
IATA teams are implementing route savings initiatives and ATM enhancements that focus on rationalizing the African route network and implementing IATA flexible routings entry/exit points to oceanic airspace such as, the Atlantic Ocean Random Routing RNAV Area (AORRA).
Simplifying the Business (StB)
Is working towards changing the way the air transport operates – resulting in better service for passengers and lower costs for the industry. This year emphasis will be placed on 4 projects across the Africa region and these are:
Financial Services
The IATA Billing Settlement Plan (BSP) and Cargo Accounts Settlement System (CASS) is present throughout the Africa region. The IATA customer portal is designed to provide information on agent accreditation, and BSP and CASS operations in the Americas (except USA), Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Industry Charges, Fuel and Taxation
IATA is ever vigilant in its negotiations on behalf of its members on savings and cost avoidance of industry taxes, charges and fuel fees.
