Alitalia, the first European airline to receive 753 Readiness Certificate

Following a review by IATA baggage team in November 2017, LItalia has become the first airline in Europe to receive a readiness certificate for resolution 753 on baggage tracking.

When in 2014, baggage tracking Resolution 753 (a resolution designed to diminish mishandling of baggage) was unanimously voted for at the Passenger Services Conference, the implementation date scheduled for 2018 seemed like a lifetime away.

During this deceptively long timespan, carriers had to work on an implementation plan at both hub and network levels, as well as the tracking process in the four mandatory points of the passenger baggage journey:

  • Passenger handover to airline
  • Loading to the aircraft
  • Delivery to the transfer area
  • Return to the passenger

After the regional and local promotion of the requirements needed to attain an airline's certificate for readiness for baggage tracking (consistent with Resolution 753), Alitalia has completed the readiness components.

Their readiness plan is further supported by the infrastructure process improvements and investments recently completed in the automated baggage handling area in Rome thanks to the sponsorship and leadership of Alitalia's operational senior management, and could not have happened without great teamwork from all the divisional staff involved.

Dino Bossa, IATA Area Manager for Southern Europe; Alessia Prodon, IATA Aviation Solution Analyst; and Stefania Tomasini, IATA Airport Facilitation Manager spent a full day with Alitalia staff including Stéphane Souny, Vice President Airport Experience; Gianluigi Lo Giudice, Post Holder Ground Operations; Pasquale Rossi, VP FCO Ground Handling, as well as with Carlo Santi, Manager FCO Airport Experience, following different bags and their tracking process for departures, transfer, and arrivals, covering the four mandatory tracking points.

What the IATA team did not anticipate was walking 7 kilometers between landside, airside, and the baggage sorting area! However, they were extremely satisfied to witness Alitalia's progress, particularly considering the airline's current financial situation, proving the Italian legacy carrier is always committed to quality improvements and operational excellence.

The next stage will be to move from readiness to compliance and implementation. Compliance certification will follow a visit from the IATA Baggage Team to review their compliance for tracking and data sharing at Rome Fiumicino.
