Transport of Dangerous Goods by Sea (Classroom, 3 days)


Learn how to apply appropriate safety precautions, and understand the legal requirements and operational restrictions involved in shipping dangerous goods by vessel transport. Gain a detailed understanding of International Maritime Dangerous Good (IMDG) Code regulations and practical knowledge of Code requirements, in relation to classification, packaging, vehicle packing and vessel stowage.

  • This classroom course provides 3 days (24 hours) of instruction delivered by an official IATA Instructor.
  • Student performance will be based on an assessment

  • Recommended level is Entry-level and Intermediate
  • The recommended level of language proficiency is ICAO Operational Level 4 for courses in English or the equivalent level for other languages.

What you will learn

Upon completing this course you will be able to:

  • Use IMDG and complete the necessary dangerous goods transport documents
  • Apply the regulations to identify, pack, mark, label and document dangerous goods
  • Understand the legal responsibilities involved with the shipping of dangerous goods by vessel transport

  • Regulatory Applicability and International Conventions
    • IMO and IMDG background and jurisdiction
    • International agreements and conventions such as SOLAS and MARPOL
    • IMDG Code key definitions, structure, application and terminology
  • Classification and Identification
    • IMDG Code class hazard definitions and basic terms
    • Use of the IMDG Code Dangerous Goods List, including marine pollutants / Special Provisions, and selection of the correct shipping name
    • Limited and excepted quantity provisions
  • Packaging
    • Use of IMDG Code packing instructions
    • General and specific packaging requirements and limitations for all types of packaging, including intermediate bulk containers, large packaging, portable tanks
    • selection of correct package for the purpose of transport by sea
  • Marking, Labeling and Placards
    • Consignment procedures, including general provisions
    • Marking and labeling of packages, including IBCs
    • Placarding requirements of cargo transport units and how to complete the multimodal Dangerous Goods form accurately
  • Vessels, CTUs consignments (segregation and stowage)
    • Understanding the stowage and segregation requirements for all types of dangerous goods shipments, including: cargo transport units, dangerous goods incidents, transport of CTUs on board ships, packing of CTUs, transport of dangerous goods in barges, temperature control provisions, transport of wastes and the competent authorities’ approvals and exemptions

Certificate awarded

An IATA Certificate of Completion is awarded to participants obtaining a grade of 80% or higher on all exercises and exams. A special distinction is awarded to participants obtaining a grade of 90% or higher.
