Panel discussion: The Future of Airline Distribution

The purpose of the panel was to examine evolving trends in airline distribution in order to try to predict the future and to determine how IATA can help shape the future of airline distribution by providing a common infrastructure and standards for consumer benefits.

Aleks Popovich, SVP Industry Distribution and Financial Services IATA
Following a successful career at British Airways including the role of General Manager Revenue Management, Aleks Popovich joined IATA in 2005 revitalized the organization’s approach to cargo including guiding the e-freight, e-AWB and secure freight projects. In October 2009, Aleks was promoted to his current IATA position of SVP Industry Distribution and Financial Services. In this role he oversees all of IATA’s passenger and cargo activities, including IATA’s flagship Simplifying the Business program. This includes responsibility for IATA’s financial systems which combined handle US$370 billion in annual settlements.

Montie Brewer
Montie Brewer was President & CEO of Air Canada from 2004 to 2009. Under his  leadership, Air Canada became an industry innovator in pricing, sales, distribution and onboard product. An industry veteran, he as held senior positions at United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Republic Airlines, Braniff and Trans World Airlines. He has developed over 20 hub operations worldwide and managed low cost airline operations as President of United Shuttle. While at United Airlines, he acted as a key negotiator in the founding of Star Alliance. He is a Member of the Board of Allegiant Travel Company and Aer Lingus and Vice-Chair of the Canadian Tourism Commission.

Rob Fyfe, Chief Executive Officer, Air New Zealand
Rob Fyfe has held the role of CEO of Air New Zealand since 2005. Since that time the airline has consolidated its strong financial position, undertaken a significant fleet and route expansion and been recognised by numerous international awards, particularly for its uniquely Kiwi experience and pursuit of delivering customers inspiring journeys. Prior to joining Air New Zealand in 2003 where he has also held the roles of Group GM Airlines and CIO, he held senior roles globally with National Australia Bank, Telecom NZ, Bank of New Zealand and ITV Group in the UK.

Gillian Gibson, Chief Marketing Officer Travelport 
As CMO, Gillian Gibson is responsible for the marketing mix including the delivery of top line growth through the commercialization of key products such as Travelport Universal API and Travelport Universal Desktop. Gillian also oversees strategic pricing; market strategy and research; and marketing communications globally. Prior to joining Travelport, Gillian spent eight years with Amadeus in a variety of senior commercial roles, most latterly as VP, Multinational Customer Group. 

Jeremy Wertheimer, Vice President, Travel, Google, Inc.
Jeremy  is former CEO and co-founder of ITA Software, a leading provider of innovative solutions to the travel industry. Jeremy sits on the Mass Technology Leadership Council's Board of Trustees. He has a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence and an S.M. in Computer Science from MIT, and a B.E. in Electrical Engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. He leads the Google Travel team from Cambridge, Mass., USA.

Mr Huang Yuanchang, Deputy General Manager Travelsky 
Mr Yuanchang graduated from Nanjing Institute of Technology, and  holds a master’s degree of administration from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Mr Huang served as the executive director of the first Board of the Company from October 2000 to December 2003, and served as the Deputy General Manager of the Company from October 2000 to November 2006. From August 2007 to August 2008, Mr Huang was the General Manager of the Marketing and Research & Development Department of China TravelSky Holding Company. Mr Huang has been a Deputy General Manager of the Company since September 2008. Mr Huang also serves as the chairman of each of Cares Hubei Co., Ltd. , Civil Aviation Cares Technology of Xi’an Ltd. and Shanghai TravelSky Information Technology Limited, all of which are subsidiaries of the Company.
