The European airspace modernization agenda has got off to a flyer in 2018, with the announcement that ENAV, the Italian air navigation service provider, will partner with IATA to develop a national airspace strategy for Italy.
The announcement is good news for travelers to and from Italy, who will ultimately benefit from faster and more frequent flights, with fewer delays. Airlines serving the Italian market will gain from lower costs, and more efficient flight paths will cut noise and CO2 emissions. Airspace modernization is also a boon for the Italian economy, leading to a potential extra 95,000 jobs and €27 billion in GDP annually by 2035.
ENAV is the third European country to commit to developing a NAS with IATA, following PANSA (Poland) and DSNA (France) last year. The aim is to bring the airlines and ANSPs together in a spirit of genuine partnership to tackle the most pressing issues facing European air traffic management. With delays running at around 15 million minutes a year, and emissions that could be cut through route efficiencies, the need for action is urgent – especially as the number of European air travelers is set to increase 50% over the next 20 years. There is also a fantastic economic and employment boost to be gained from modernization and reform at both national and pan-European level.
