(GENEVA) Giovanni Bisignani, Director General and CEO of IATA today announced the appointment of Mr Peter Chikumba as the Association's regional Director for Africa, effective September 16, 2002.

Peter will be based at IATA's office in Nairobi, Kenya. This will provide opportunity for greater collaboration with other organizations in Nairobi, in particular AFRAA and ICAO. The posting will strengthen co-ordination with IATA's African Regional Office for Operations & Infrastructure.

Peter takes over from Sassy N'Diaye who will retire on December 31, 2002 after over 30 years of service to IATA and African aviation. IATA Director General and CEO, Giovanni Bisignani commented that, "Sassy N'Diaye's knowledge, experience and 'savoir faire' will be missed greatly by all at IATA and in African aviation. His contributions to the industry have been immeasurable and we wish him well in his retirement. We also welcome Peter Chikumba to the IATA team. Our priority is to better understand and effectively respond to the changing needs of our members. I am confident that Peter's skills and experience will be of great value to our members in Africa."

Peter brings over 25 years of aviation experience to the job with Air Zimbabwe and Air Namibia. Peter's career includes both technical and business development postings at Air Zimbabwe and Air Namibia. Peter joins IATA from his current position as Managing Director of Air Namibia. "Aviation is an essential part of African life and I look forward to ensuring that IATA is a key player in ensuring its robust future development," said Chikumba.
