A look back at the evolution of global air transport
The IATA Heritage Collection brings together more than 130 artifacts that help tell the story of international civil aviation and IATA’s place within it. The pieces range from early documents and photographs to memorabilia that captures different moments in the airline industry’s development.
Together, they illustrate how air transport has evolved since 1945.
How the collection took shape
The idea for the Heritage Collection emerged when IATA staff began noticing historical aviation items appearing in online auctions and private sales. At the time, IATA didn’t have a formal archive, and it became clear that many of these objects - some quite rare - might be difficult to track down in future.

Over several years, items were located, purchased, and catalogued. Some were easy to secure; others required patience and persistence to obtain and, at times, competing with collectors. Bit by bit, the collection expanded into something substantial.
From an internal effort to a permanent display
As the number of artifacts increased, these items were chronologically displayed and safely stored in a dedicated space at IATA’s Geneva office to share them more widely. This permanent exhibition highlights key moments, people, and ideas that shaped modern air transport.
The result is a tangible experience that gives visitors a sense of how the industry has evolved, and how IATA’s work has contributed to that evolution.
