Bangkok - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Federation of Freight Forwarders (FIATA) have signed a five-year agreement to extend their cooperation in the delivery of a wide-range of air cargo certificate training programmes.

IATA Training & Development Institute (ITDI) and FIATA-AFI will leverage distance learning techniques and 75 IATA-FIATA-AFI Authorised Training Centres (ATC) located in 33 countries worldwide to offer certified courses on air cargo operations, safety, rating and the safe transport of dangerous goods via air cargo (both introduction and recurrent training).

As part of the agreement IATA and FIATA will develop additional courses including a programme uniquely designed and focused on air freight forwarder customers that will lead to a diploma in air cargo forwarding.

“Our shared goal is to develop cargo professionals with the right skills and knowledge to operate effectively in an increasingly challenging environment,” said Aleks Popovich, Global Head of Cargo for IATA. “International air cargo and global logistics is becoming even more complex and must respond to cost, time, and safety/security pressures. It is essential that the people working in this industry have all the requisite professional skills and knowledge to get the job done effectively and efficiently, every day. I am very pleased that IATA is partnering with FIATA on this important undertaking”.

The agreement also establishes a formal working group, with equal representation from FIATA-AFI and IATA. IATA will provide the infrastructure of cargo training with its ATCs, and FIATA will increase its promotion of training programmes to the freight forwarding industry.

IATA and FIATA have cooperated on cargo training since 1978.
