Safety Issue Review Meeting Africa

In 2023 the Collaborative Aviation Safety Improvement Program (CASIP) was launched under IATA’s Focus Africa Initiative. As part of the CASIP,  IATA’s global Safety Issues Review Meeting (SIRM) was brought to the region in 2023 dedicated to discussing and addressing regional issues.

Following the success of the initial meeting, 2024 shall see the SIRM brought to the region for two events. Held under Chatham House Rule, the meeting is open to safety professionals from across the Air Navigation System including airlines, original equipment manufacturers, airports, ground service providers and safety professional from Air Traffic Management as well as invited subject matter experts from academia, pilot associations and other industry stakeholders.

The First of the year will be held 24-25 April 2024, in Dakar, Senegal focusing on Western Africa and will discuss a wide variety of safety topics across a diverse spectrum including:

  • Prioritizing Runway Safety in the region focusing on High Risk Categories (HRCs)
  • Air Traffic Management, proactively addressing Loss of Separation (LoS) precursors
  • Establishing regional fixed and mobile air/ground communication footprint, current safety nets, and progress towards regional improvements
  • Cabin Operations Training, discussing the handling of High Energy Devices in Cabin Baggage, and the inadvertent deployment of slides
  • Promoting  Safety Leadership within the region, driving the development of aviation safety leadership and culture.
