The IATA Special Cargo Handling Diploma is an in-depth training program designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to manage the transport of sensitive and high-value commodities such as , live animals, perishables, human remains and pharmaceuticals. This diploma, which consists of four courses over three years, provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex regulatory requirements, best practices, and technical expertise necessary to handle these special cargo shipments safely and efficiently. Throughout the program, and with a strong emphasis on compliance with international regulations, you will explore the unique needs of various types of special cargo and gain a thorough understanding of how to handle them. You will learn how to manage time- and temperature-sensitive shipments to ensure they reach their destination in optimal condition, diving into the latest trends in perishable cargo transportation. You’ll also gain practical insights into live animal shipping, including the use of the IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR), and learn how Human Remains must be shipped. The program also covers the transportation of pharmaceuticals and healthcare products, providing critical knowledge on the packaging, storage, and handling of time- and temperature-sensitive shipments in line with Quality Management Systems (QMS) applicable to both the healthcare and air cargo sectors. This diploma is ideal for cargo handlers, freight forwarders, airlines, and professionals involved in the logistics and transportation of special cargo. A passing mark is required on all assignments and exams. A special distinction is awarded to candidates who obtain a distinction in all, or all but one, of all course exams and assignments that make up this Diploma.

How to obtain your diploma

1. Complete all Required courses that make up the Diploma, within 3 years.
2. Please contact us on our Customer Portal to request your diploma, stating the title of the diploma you are applying for and the list of courses you completed for that diploma.
3. IATA Training will issue your diploma upon verification of your eligibility.

Please note: We have recently revised the structure of this diploma to better align with current industry needs and standards. As part of this update, the elective courses have been removed from the program. If you have already completed any of these previously eligible elective courses, they will still be recognized toward your diploma requirements until 1 June 2028.
