Some items may endanger the safety of an aircraft or persons on board, and the air transportation of these dangerous materials can either be forbidden or restricted. As a result, IATA works closely with local governments and ICAO to develop regulations that are effective and efficient, and that ensure the safe transport of dangerous goods by air.

The IATA DGR manual is the global reference for shipping dangerous goods by air, and the only standard recognized by airlines. The content contains up-to-date information on effective and efficient regulations, which ensures the safe transport of dangerous goods by air. This manual is the result of IATA closely working with airline members, local governments and ICAO.

All parties involved in the shipment of dangerous goods by air can benefit from using the DGR including ailrines, freight forwarders, ground handlers, manufacturers, and shippers.

Safety is the industry's #1 priority

The air transport industry is constantly evolving and as a result IATA releases a new edition of the DGR every year to keep up with the changes and to address any issues identified by any stakeholder involved in the process.

There are significant changes included in the latest edition of the DGR. Some of the key highlights include:

  • Inclusions of all amendments made by the IATA Dangerous Goods Board and includes addenda issued by ICAO to the content of the 2019–2020 edition of the Technical Instructions
  • The single packagings tables have been revised to better identify composite packagings
  • The guidance material on development and implementation of competency-based training for dangerous goods has been extensively revised based on engagement with, and input from regulatory authorities, training providers and member airlines
  • A new appendix has been added to this edition of the DGR to provide the detail of the changes that will come into effect as of 1 January 2021 based on the adoption of the changes arising from the 21st revised edition of the UN Model Regulations as well as the changes that have been agreed to date by the ICAO Dangerous Goods Panel for inclusion into the 2021–2022 edition of the Technical Instructions
