Under the Chicago Convention, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has been mandated with the gathering of air transport statistics from contracting States since 1947. These statistics are used to derive level trends and indicators to support the sustainable development of civil aviation activities. At national levels, air transport statistics are compiled by airlines, airports and civil aviation authorities applying international standards. Internationally, ICAO as well as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Airports Council International (ACI), gather aviation statistics directly from airlines, airports and civil aviation authorities supporting the various airline industry initiatives while monitoring the industry's performance in terms of traffic, employment, and financial results. Air transport statistics are widely used throughout the industry, ranging from monitoring global industry performance to detailed network planning and competitor benchmarking. You will learn about the international standards and definitions that are used to produce air transport statistics, and to recognize the differences between the statistics gathered by ICAO, IATA and ACI. Having inside knowledge about the various statistics sources and methodologies will strengthen your organization ability to compile, interpret and leverage air transportation statistics for the purpose of meaningful analysis and industry performance monitoring.
